Knitting needle sizing
Knitting needles come in Amercan, British, Japanese and Metric sizing. Although all 3 systems have their equivalents in almost all sizes, there is a minute difference. For example, a Size 8 British needle is equivalent to the 4mm metric needle, but Size 8 British needle is actually 4.2mm. In practice, 0.2mm has a very slight effect on tension only. The easiest thing to do is to use a needle gauge to work which needle to use! Generally, most knitting books will use the American or British system along side with the metric system.
